External Scholarships for Education Abroad

There are a large number of funding opportunities provided by institutions and endowments outside of ��, and we encourage students to apply for any opportunities for which they qualify. The ones listed below are programs for which �� students have typically been very successful with obtaining funding. Our office can advise on these scholarships.

These scholarships require verification from our office and/or other campus offices; please review the scholarship deadlines and contact the scholarship advisor for the Office of International Education and Global Initiatives at iegi@binghamton.edu to schedule an advising appointment before the posted deadlines.

The Gilman Scholarship supports U.S. citizens enrolled as an undergraduate and receiving a Pell Grant. The award guidelines are intended to assist students with high financial need. Semester and summer awards may be up to $5,000. An additional $3,000 may be granted for applicants pursuing studies in critical need languages, and an additional $1,000 may granted for students pursuing STEM-related research as part of their abroad program. There are two application cycles per year, and the application deadline depends on when one plans to study abroad. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active duty military service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. The scholarship supports U.S. citizens enrolled as an undergraduate and receiving ANY TYPE of Title IV federal financial aid. For application information and tips, please click .

  - Note: There will be a second application cycle (deadline 10/3/25) for winter 2026 through fall 2026 programs.

The Boren Awards is a very competitive national program available to undergraduate (Boren Scholarships) and Graduate (Boren Fellowships) U.S. citizens. Applicants should plan to participate in a language-intensive program in a location that is considered relevant to current U.S. national security interests; programs in Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand are ineligible. A full list of eligible countries and languages are on the Boren Awards website. Recipients are expected to begin a minimum of one year in a government position relevant to National Security within 2 years of graduation. Semester awards may be up to $12,500. Academic year awards may be up to $25,000. Summer STEM program recipients may receive up to $8,000 and summer domestic fellowship language study awards up to $12,000. There is one application deadline per year, early in the spring semester. Due to the intensity of the application process, it is recommended that applicants meet with the IEGI scholarship advisor no later than December. Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage education abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States. Summer recipients are awarded up to $3,000 (note that summer programs must be at least 8 week sin length), while semester or Academic Year recipients can be awarded up to $5,000.
