The First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City This Day Program believes we may only have one moment in time to help someone in need. Our mission is to envelop those individuals and families within a benevolent community. This Day seeks to alleviate physical, emotional and spiritual hunger through services that provide relief for critically unmet basic needs. The program is committed to serving Broome County and surrounding areas. However, no one who requests help is turned away. This Day Program offers a free hot meal on Wednesday evenings throughout the year. Doors open at 4:00 and the meal is served from 4:30 until 5:30. Additionally, guests can receive groceries, frozen meals, and lunches during open hours: Monday through Wednesday from 10:00 until 2:00 and Thursdays by appointment. Emergency food box deliveries are made by referral. All other services, such as clothing, bedding, hygiene products, small household items, showers by appointment, durable medical equipment, shelter assistance, advocacy and referrals, are available during open hours as well. The program strongly believes that collaboration with other organizations moves our guests from crisis to consistency more effectively and with better outcomes. We work with over forty-five partners through reciprocal referrals, shared events and tabling opportunities. The program serves all without hesitation or reservation. This Day has no qualifying criteria which ensures everyone has access to food and other basic needs. Providing services without prerequisites contributes to reducing food and basic need insecurity inequity and disparity for historically marginalized and minoritized groups such as racial and ethnic communities, the elderly, the indigent, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, veterans, refugees and rural communities. Other vulnerable populations served include those that do not meet the criteria for county assisted food benefits or have been disqualified due to compliance failure, those who are awaiting benefits to begin, and those who are unhoused. This Day also welcomes volunteers from all walks of life including those with court mandated community service.
